Dining out on the West Coast - a treat for the taste buds

Category Property News

Our beloved West Coast is more than just a fantastic place to live and work - it is a treat for the taste buds and a smorgasbord of culinary delights. The fact that people from Cape Town are well known for their willingness to make a day trip to areas such as Paternoster (some 150km away) to visit one of our West Coast restaurants is testament to the wonderful ambience, food and service that can be found here.

There is a wide range of restaurants on the West Coast, and there's definitely something for everyone. Sotheby's Realty West Coast - with our vast knowledge of the area - is proud to bring you our list of seven of the best.

This Paternoster gem was officially awarded the title of Best Restaurant in the World at the World Restaurant Awards in Paris in February 2019. It's a 20-seater eatery in a quaint fisherman's cottage that has been revamped to set the stage upon which the renowned chef Kobus van der Merwe works his magic. Sustainability and locally-sourced ingredients are the name of the game, and the current seasonal menu features local lamb and venison as well as sustainable veldkos and seafood. In December 2019, Wolfgat was honoured by a visit from President Cyril Ramaphosa and his family
- which is testament to the outstanding cuisine and service to be found at this world-renowned restaurant.

The gorgeous beach views from the Strandloper Hotel create another backdrop against which visitors to the West Coast can enjoy a meal that they will not soon forget. The views, delectable cuisine and wonderful ambience at Leeto work together to create a venue that is exceptionally popular with those visiting the area from abroad. A full English breakfast is on offer daily, while the lunch and dinner menus offer the very best that the West Coast has to offer.

Abalone House & Spa

The five-star Abalone House & Spa has a restaurant that boasts a relaxing, comfortable atmosphere. Fittingly, the menu is inspired by seafood. A heads-up from locals is to save room to try some of the mouthwatering desserts, which include the West Coast African Trio, consisting of chocolate truffles, almond vanilla ice cream and an espresso with Voorkamer Pot Still Brandy.

Voorstrandt boasts the accolade of being the oldest restaurant in Paternoster - it celebrated its 20th birthday in December 2019. The restaurant can be found in a quaint tin house, which is more than 100 years old and is situated right on the beach. The menu brings seafood, meat and much more to the table, with dishes such as seafood curry, prawns, burgers, seafood pasta - amongst many others - being on offer. One of Voorstrandt's claims to fame is being one of the first restaurants that former President Nelson Mandela chose to visit after his release from prison in 1990.

Noisy Oyster

With its cosy setting, music, friendly staff and mouthwatering food, the Noisy Oyster is described as "a theatre of food and life".  The atmosphere is quirky and fun; the cuisine is authentically West Coast and the service is offered with a smile.

The only things that the varied dishes on the menu at Gaaitjie have in common is a focus on local produce and the fact that they are prepared by some of the West Coast's most talented chefs. The restaurant's setting and location - a whitewashed fisherman's cottage set among the rocks on Paternoster beach - is nothing short of breathtaking.

Paternoster Brewery & Restaurant

In December 2019, the West Coast welcomed the new kid on the block to its list of must-try restaurants. Beer is a focus here - as the name suggests - and this brewery has already developed a reputation for its outstanding pilseners, drafts and other beers. The menu at Paternoster Brewery & Restaurant focuses on quality rather than quantity of dishes, but you are guaranteed a good meal and a great dining experience.

Outstanding eateries are just one of the many elements of West Coast living that makes this stunning part of South Africa a dream home for many. Find out more about real estate on the market in this area by contacting Sotheby's Realty West Coast or checking out the current listings.
